As we think about the Great Commission and our role as witnesses for Christ, it's essential to remember that our mission field is right where we are. We are called to witness to those around us, regardless of our personality or comfort level.

The Great Commission: What Does It Mean?

What is the Great Commission?

The Great Commission, found in Matthew 28:16-20, is Jesus' command to His followers to spread the gospel to all nations. This includes our neighbors, coworkers, and everyone we encounter daily. Jesus empowers us with the Holy Spirit to bear witness to His love and salvation.

Why is Witnessing Important?

Witnessing is not just a task; it's a vital part of the Christian life. It's essential for fulfilling God's plan for humanity's salvation. While only God can save, He uses us as tools to spread His message. Our mission field is wherever God has placed us, and we are called to be active participants in His redemptive plan.

The Assurance of Authority

What Does "All Power" Mean?

In Matthew 28:18, Jesus says, "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth." This means that all the power necessary for us to witness is already given to us through the Holy Spirit. Our ability to witness does not depend on our strength but on God's power.

Overcoming Doubt

The passage mentions that some disciples doubted. This doubt doesn't excuse us from our responsibility to witness. Jesus reassures us that evangelism is not contingent upon our performance but on His power. Our personal testimony is a powerful tool in evangelism, and sharing it can be as simple as telling someone how Jesus changed our life.

The Anticipation of Action

What Does "Go Ye Therefore" Mean?

In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commands us to "go and teach all nations." This directive implies that there are people ready to hear the gospel. The fields are white and ready for harvest, and we are called to be laborers in this mission.

The Scope of Our Mission

Our mission is global, but it starts with our immediate surroundings. Jesus promises to be with us always, offering continual support and presence as we carry out this command. The Great Commission involves not just winning souls but also baptizing and teaching them to observe all things Jesus has commanded.

The Expansion of the Local Church

How Does the Holy Spirit Empower Us?

Acts 1:8 states, "But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you." This power enables us to witness in our immediate surroundings and beyond. The Holy Spirit's strength allows us to step out of our comfort zones and share the gospel effectively.

The Role of the Local Church

The local church must be mobilized to witness from Monday through Saturday. The Sunday morning gathering alone will not win our community or the world to Christ. We must embrace our role as witnesses and look for opportunities to share the gospel in every situation.

The Essence of Evangelism is Eternity

What is the Core Message of the Gospel?

John 3:16 encapsulates the core message of the gospel: God's love manifested in the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ. This message is foundational to our testimony and has an eternal impact. Every person we point towards Jesus has an impact on eternity.

Making It Personal

The gospel message is personal. For God so loved you that He gave His only begotten Son. When we share this message, we are changing eternity for someone. The essence of evangelism is not just about numbers but about individual lives transformed by the love of Christ.

Life Application

How Can We Apply This Message?

  1. Embrace Your Role: Understand that you are called to be a witness for Christ. This week, look for opportunities to share your faith, whether it's in line at the grocery store or during a coffee break at work.
  2. Rely on God's Power: Remember that the power to witness comes from the Holy Spirit, not from your abilities. Trust in God's strength to guide your conversations and interactions.
  3. Share Your Testimony: Your personal story of how Jesus changed your life is a powerful tool. Don't worry about having all the right answers; simply share your experience and let the Holy Spirit work through you.
